1:30am- The Perfect Time to Work on this Monstrosity

  • Mood: delirious
  • Music: "You Can't Always Get What You Want"

Hmmm....you know when you start something and you realize that it was perhaps more work than you originally anticipated? Hahaha- well, welcome to my world.  This thing just keeps on growing and growing- either I'm going to run out of time, run out of space, or run out of patience- or possibly a combination of all three.

The good news- the History section, aka the most boringest section EVER (tm) is complete, so everything else is going to  be smooth sailing.  The question is- can I possibly finish both this website (and have time to get feedback from others), AND the paper I have due on Wednesday?  Hmm.....this is going to be interesting.  I say that if I cut down my sleeping time to roughly 3 hours a night, I can possibly do it. Where's Ron Schneider when you need him?

Okay, my words are getting all swirly...I better kick the cats off the bed and get some shut-eye. YAWN.ZZZZZZZZZZZz..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......zzzzzzzzzzzzz

The Sky is Falling!

  • Mood: My head hurts
  • Music: The sound of silence

Ok- I have just discovered the most annoying sound in the ENTIRE world.  Although 'cat in heat' and 'collic-ey baby' rank pretty high up there, DRILLING ON THE ROOF OF YOUR BUILDING AT 7AM is the definite front runner.  Do you know how hard it is to concentrate on anything when your apartment is shaking, and all you can hear is what sounds like a dentist drill magnified by 1 million percent coming from your ceiling?  And during exam period too....gee, thanks.

For that reason, I have resorted to using the computer in the grad lounge to work on this project- the computer's name is Morton. And I do believe he's a shitbag.  I don't like him very much, and I'm sure he doesn't like me- but it's going to work damnit, because at this point my options are pretty limited.

Speaking of this website, I think it's safe to say that the outbreak of nice weather the Ottawa region has received over the past few days has severely limited the time I spent teathered to my computer.  It's really hard to justify staying in and staring at a computer screen for an entire day when it's 20 degrees and sunny out... especially when the various pubs already have their patios open

So, in order to make up for my slacking off, this is the plan for the next few days; eat, sleep, and breathe this project until it gets done, which hopefully will be by Saturday morning (since I have 55 exams to mark by Monday).

*sigh*... at least the weather is going to be shitty.

Progress- and more validation on the notion that I suck.

  • Mood: Sleepy
  • Music: The hummmmm of the lounge computer

OK- so here is the rundown of my last 24 hours.

After I got back from campus yesterday (after staring at the computer in the Criminology Graduate Lounge for about 6 hours), I fired up my laptop and proceeded to stare at a DIFFERENT computer screen for a few more hours.  Wow, don't I live an exciting and eventful life?

After making an MSN plea to my friends for help on this project of death, a few people came out of the woodwork to offer assistance.  First Darren, aka Bible Boy, aka computer genius, aka GOD came forth with webspace and an FTP protocol (WTF mate?)- which means that he can hook me up with some space for this site minus the adds! (Sidebar- I still have NO FRIGGIN CLUE how it works, and if it's even possible to upload what I have been working on so far to another site. This should be an interesting experience). Then Kera, aka owlgal, aka Remus Lupin's sex slave, aka GODDESS sent me a copy of Dreamweaver, which is a supersweet friggin' tool to build a website with. Hahaha- unfortunately, I have realize that is it SO friggin' sweet that my feeble mind cannot figure out how to make it work.  Ah, the irony. I now have add-free webspace, and a tool by which I can create a decent product.....but am completely CLUELESS as to how!

So, on to plan B. Today I have moved this site from Tripod to Bravenet, where there are more add-ins, such as message boards, guestbook, etc. It also fixes the pesky problem of having the huge gaping hole on the righthand side.  As a trade off however, apparently Bravenet expect you to have SOME sort of knowledge when it comes to this matter....so it's been REAL fun figuring out where to paste what code and why.

Hahaha....every moment that option of writing a paper is getting more and more appealing!

Procrastination Nation

  • Mood: Scared
  • Music: Deadly Silence

OKay...you know sometimes when you start something, and then completely slack off until you realize 'oh shit, it's due'?  Well folks, welcome to my reality.

Approximately two months ago I came up with the idea of creating this website in lieu of a paper for the final in my Regulating Cyberspace class (CRM 6380).  I ambitiously even had the idea that I would start early , and have a completed project well before the deadline so I could focus on the papers due in my other classes without worry...

HA~! I got as far as signing up for free webspace, and messing around with the various tools the site offers.  I even STARTED to write a blog about my experiences thusfar with website building, but then my eyes started to do the weird vibrating thing that happens after I stare at a computer screen for too long.  I gave up for the day, with the intention of picking it up again the next day to complete it.

That 'next day' lasted over two months. *Sigh*

So, Revelation #1- My time management skills SUCK, although  my skills at procrastination are top notch.

Revelation #2 - I'm going to have to haul some serious ass in order to get this done not only ontime, but to the degree that I am satisfied with the final product.

Revelation #3 - I am a complete techno-squib.

For those of you not versed in the language or Harry Potter, a 'squid' is an individual born into a witch/wizarding family, but who possess no magical skills.  I am a woman born into a technologically advanced society, yet possesses no skills whatsoever at working with technology.  It's pretty sad actually

AS a result, I apologize in advance for the pre-designed template (which, by the way, leaves a huge gaping hole on the righthand side of the page), and the lack of fun little icons and graphics.  As much as you may like chocolate, this is going to be pure vanilla.

The Joys of Free Webspace....

  • Mood: Hopeful
  • Music: the chatter of other students

Welcome all to my very first day of working on my final project for Regulating Cyberspace; a class I am enrolled in at the  University of Ottawa, Canada (http://www.uottawa.ca). This is where I will be tracking my progress and most likely venting my frustrations on both the building of and public response to this site.
